catetos

31 August 2006

Another great photoset from Papelcontinuo. This appears to be some sort of French novelty cards (card game?). I dunno what it is. Babelfish translates ‘catetos’ as ‘legs’. The design reminds me of another great French card game, Mille Bornes. Would like to see a photoset of the original (c. 1960s) Mille Bornes cards but there doesn’t seem to be one out there as yet and I’m too lazy and/or busy to scan mine.

    Hi!
First thanks for the links to papel continuo. I have just discovered your blog. “catetos” is a word used by kids in the 60’s 80’s to name those simple family card games.

Ah, very good. I was a little mystified that I couldn’t find any other reference to them on the web - but I don’t know what they’re called in France. I found one other person on Flickr with these here, for instance, the Eskimo familia.

My guess is that these cards are used to play something like Old Maid, if you know what that is…?

I don’t remember how we played those cards. I was too small :)
Anyway the other card set you linked is the typical card set all the spanish kids had in the 70’s.
Here is another link for those sets.

In teacuerdas.com there’s plenty of spanish nostalgic stuff . Hope you like it.
